Global Gateway reopens for Scottish exporters with Heathrow’s ‘World of Opportunity’ relaunch

Aberdeen to Atlanta? Highlands to Helsinki? Kilmarnock to Kuala Lumpar? For Scottish businesses, exporting to these destinations may seem far away – not just in terms of miles.

But, the gateway to global success has reopened for businesses across Scotland as Heathrow relaunches its ‘World of Opportunity’ programme, an initiative designed to help small and medium sized enterprises (SME) expand their international reach.

The UK’s hub airport is inviting SMEs from across Scotland to apply to the initiative, which has already propelled dozens of businesses across the UK to explore opportunities far beyond its own lands.

Heathrow, as the UK’s largest port by value, is a vital connector for Scotland to 92% of the global economy. It is more than just an airport; it can be a significant springboard for businesses.

While to small businesses it may feel daunting the benefits of taking the step to export abroad are vast. Exporting is one of the best ways for Scottish businesses to grow – new markets mean new customers, more sales and ultimately more revenue.

Through funding, mentoring, and market research Heathrow’s programme encourages and guides SMEs to ease qualms and remove barriers they may have to expanding their customer bases abroad.

Applications are open until 31 December for businesses ready to reach new heights and 12 successful applicants from across the UK will each receive a £2,000 grant to support their export ambitions.

Alongside the grant, winners will benefit from assistance from the Department for Business and Trade’s Business Growth Service to help with research and export strategies.

Ochil Fudge, a Scottish business based in Alloa, had its export opportunities sweetened last year through the World of Opportunity programme following its successful application. A family-run business, known for its handmade, small-batch fudge in over 20 flavours, is now preparing to take a taste of Scotland to the U.S market.

The grant funding they received enabled Ochil Fudge to conduct vital market research and attend a trade mission—two critical steps in its international expansion and steps that ensure they are anything but fudging the next steps for the business.

“Winning the Heathrow World of Opportunity grant is a huge boost for an artisan business like Ochil Fudge,” said Fergus Aitken, Head of Sales and Marketing at Ochil Fudge. “It not only recognises the care and craft we put into every batch but also gives us the resources to grow. With this support, we’re investing in expanding our knowledge and capabilities to bring our Scottish fudge to new markets in America.”

Nigel Milton, Heathrow’s Chief Communications and Sustainability Officer, emphasised the importance of the initiative, he said: “Scotland is home to entrepreneurs with enormous potential to succeed on the global stage. SMEs across the nation produce outstanding products and services, and unlocking their ability to access international markets is vital for driving economic growth and supporting jobs.”

Trade Minister Chris Bryant added: “Small businesses right across the UK have incredible potential to grow internationally, and initiatives like this help turn that potential into reality. With Heathrow connecting UK firms to the rest of the world, this programme perfectly complements our Trade Strategy and provides a welcome gateway to funding and tools that help exporters succeed overseas.”
