HEALTH AND SAFETY

The Health & Safety Executive has advised employers to consider ways to manage mental ill health in the workplace including the delivery of mental health first aid as part of an overall first aid risk assessment. This 2 day course aims to give delegates the opportunity to develop skills as a mental health first aider, including;

• Providing comfort and support in a crisis until help arrives.

• Understanding the 5 step listening skills and support strategy.

• Appreciation of the boundaries of the role and the importance of self-care.

Scottish Mental Health First Aid (SMHFA) is one of several projects supported by the Scottish Government to improve and promote the mental health of people in Scotland. SMHFA is the first step in helping a person experiencing a mental health crisis and is intended to be used until other help arrives.

The course opens with an introductory section on our attitudes to mental health, the mental health continuum and an understanding of recovery from mental health problems.
A key part of the course is How to Ask About Suicide and this is covered in depth on Day 1 together with an opportunity to practice Listening Skills.

Day 2 gives delegates an opportunity to apply these key principles to four differing mental ill health scenarios – depression, anxiety, self-harm and psychosis. The course will also look briefly at how Alcohol and Drugs may affect our mental health.

The framework of the course is intended to protect the wellbeing of all those who attend. In order to ensure the safety of all those who attended, it is important to highlight that the course is not intended as a therapeutic or counselling space.

The course is delivered by a LAW experienced trainer accredited by the NHS to deliver SMHFA with the aim of providing a supportive training environment for all.
