From Guy Fawkes to finding great employees, Bonfire Night has a few surprising lessons for Scottish businesses. And thankfully, none involve barrels of gunpowder!
By AllNeeds Recruitment Co. Ltd.
Every November we wrap ourselves in seventeen layers of clothing, stand in a freezing field, clutch a hot chocolate and watch fireworks light up the sky.
But behind the fireworks and bonfires lies a story dating back more than 400 years. And surprisingly, it has a few lessons for modern recruitment.
Yes, really!
Remember, Remember… What Are We Actually Celebrating?
Back in 1605, a group of conspirators led by Robert Catesby planned to blow up Parliament and assassinate King James I.
Guy Fawkes was discovered guarding barrels of gunpowder beneath the House of Lords, the plot was foiled, and Bonfire Night eventually became a British tradition.
Four centuries later, we’re still remembering his name.
And thanks to V for Vendetta, the famous Guy Fawkes mask has become a worldwide symbol of challenging the establishment.
Quite the reputation for someone whose original plan went spectacularly wrong!
But perhaps there’s something businesses can learn from challenging the way things have always been done. Particularly when it comes to recruitment.
Is It Time to Spark a Recruitment Revolution?
Remember when recruiting seemed relatively straightforward?
Advertise a vacancy, receive applications, interview a few candidates and appoint the right person.
These days, you can receive dozens of CVs, spend hours reviewing them and finally find someone who looks perfect.
Experienced? Tick.
Qualified? Tick.
Available? Tick.
Interested? Absolutely!
Then, just as you’re arranging the interview…
They’ve accepted another job.
Sound familiar?
Recruitment has become increasingly challenging, with businesses balancing staffing shortages, rising costs and the need to keep operations running smoothly.
So perhaps it’s time to rethink a few familiar recruitment habits.
Five Recruitment Lessons from the Fifth of November
- Even the Best Plans Need the Right People
The Gunpowder Plot involved months of planning and preparation.
Admittedly, not the sort of project we’d recommend discussing at your next management meeting! But the principle applies to business.
You can secure a fantastic new contract, plan an ambitious expansion or set impressive targets. Without the right people, however, even the best plans can quickly unravel.
Whether it’s skilled tradespeople, production operatives or experienced office staff, recruitment needs to be part of your business strategy.
After all, it’s better to plan ahead than make that familiar Friday afternoon call: “Any chance you could find us three people for Monday?”
- Don’t Let Great Candidates Go Up in Smoke
You’ve found the perfect candidate, everyone’s impressed.
Then someone suggests another meeting, the manager’s on holiday, the interview gets rearranged, and suddenly, your ideal candidate has disappeared.
Poof! Another recruitment opportunity up in smoke.
Good candidates often have choices. A clear recruitment process, timely feedback and prompt decisions can make all the difference.
There’s no need to rush important decisions, but there’s certainly something to be said for keeping things moving.
- Sometimes You Need to Challenge the Establishment
Guy Fawkes’ image has become associated with challenging established thinking.
Now, we’re not suggesting your HR department needs a revolution.
Although anyone who’s spent three hours resetting a recruitment portal password might disagree! But perhaps it’s worth questioning whether every vacancy genuinely needs five years’ experience, six qualifications and a candidate who can apparently perform miracles before lunchtime.
Could transferable skills be just as valuable?
Could a temporary-to-permanent arrangement offer greater flexibility?
Might someone with the right attitude and willingness to learn become an outstanding employee?
Sometimes the best candidate isn’t the one who ticks every box. It’s the one who brings something different to the team.
- Communication Can Make or Break the Mission
An anonymous warning letter helped expose the Gunpowder Plot.
Proof that communication can change everything!
Thankfully, recruitment involves fewer secret messages, although judging by some inboxes, a few emails might as well be written in invisible ink.
Clear communication between employers, candidates and recruitment agencies helps prevent misunderstandings, delays and unnecessary frustration.
At AllNeeds Recruitment, we believe a quick telephone call and an honest update can go a long way.
Because surprises are great on Bonfire Night. They’re less enjoyable when your new employee arrives expecting an office job and discovers they’re operating a forklift in the rain!
- The Biggest Bang Doesn’t Always Make the Best Impression
We’ve all seen that spectacular firework. Bright, colourful, impossible to ignore.
And then, seconds later, it’s gone.
Interviews can sometimes be similar.
A candidate arrives full of confidence, delivers polished answers and makes a fantastic first impression. But what really matters is what happens afterwards.
Are they reliable? Can they do the job? Will they work well with colleagues?
Some of the best employees aren’t necessarily the loudest people in the interview room.
They’re the ones who turn up, get stuck in and quietly become invaluable.
Because lasting results matter far more than a spectacular first impression.
Less Gunpowder, More People Power!
At AllNeeds Recruitment, we’ve spent more than 26 years supporting the business community.
And if there’s one thing we’ve learned, it’s that recruitment rarely goes exactly to plan!
From unexpected staffing shortages to last-minute project requirements, we understand the pressures employers face. We also recognise that behind every vacancy is a business trying to keep moving, and behind every application is someone looking for an opportunity.
Our job is to bring the two together. Whether it’s temporary, temporary-to-permanent or permanent recruitment, we focus on understanding our clients, identifying suitable candidates and keeping communication flowing.
No grand gestures. No unnecessary fireworks. Just a professional, personal approach to finding the right people.
Remember, Remember… It’s the People Who Make the Difference!
So, as we prepare for another Bonfire Night perhaps there’s one business lesson worth remembering.
Successful recruitment isn’t about making the biggest noise.
It’s about planning ahead, thinking differently, communicating clearly and finding people who genuinely make a difference.
Less plotting. Less smoke. Fewer unexpected explosions.
And a lot more people power!
From everyone at AllNeeds Recruitment Co. Ltd., we wish our clients, candidates and fellow Scottish businesses a safe and spectacular Bonfire Night.
And remember… the only thing we’d like to see going off with a bang this November is your business success!
