We tend to talk about apprenticeships in terms of what they teach: a skill, a framework, a certificate at the end. But for a lot of young people the real value is something harder to measure. It is direction. It is finding out what you are good at, and what you actually want to do, by doing it.
Ciaran McDougall, Quality Assurance Administrator at Direct Partners route is a great example.
A Different Way to Learn
Like many school leavers, Ciaran went to college first without a clear sense of where he was headed. It didn’t suit him. He learned better by doing, and studying theory with no way to apply it felt disconnected from the work he wanted to be doing. An apprenticeship offered something more practical: a way to work out what he enjoyed in a real setting.
His way in was a “pathways into apprenticeship” programme, set up during covid to help young people move into employment. It gave him structure, workplace exposure and confidence, and led directly into a Modern Apprenticeship in Digital Applications. From there he was earning and learning at the same time.
Learning that Leads Somewhere
Because the training was tied to his job, everything he learned had an immediate use, so he improved quickly and took on real responsibility early: managing digital systems, improving internal processes, and analysing data to support decisions. That hands-on experience showed him where his interest lay. He went on to complete a second Modern Apprenticeship in Data Analytics, specialising, stepping into a more technical role, and becoming the go-to person in his area of the business.
This is what work-based learning does well. It does not just deliver a qualification; it helps people find a direction and build towards it.
The Skills that Don’t Show Up on a Certificate
Some of the most important gains are the least visible. Ciaran came out of the process with far stronger communication and confidence, having struggled at first with the everyday demands of meetings and phone calls. Alongside that came teamwork, self-management and resilience, the sort of skills every employer values and no exam sets out to test.
Why it Works
For learners, the appeal is clear: qualifications and experience without student debt, training that is directly relevant to the job, and the clarity that comes from working out your direction in a real environment rather than in theory.
The result is someone more employable on both counts, with recognised qualifications and the proven experience to back them up. As Ciaran puts it, “Looking back, it was undoubtedly the right call.”
