After a transformative 16 years at the helm of the University of Strathclyde, Professor Sir Jim McDonald CBE stepped down from his role as Principal and Vice-Chancellor in August 2025.
His tenure, which began in 2009, has been marked by exceptional growth, innovation, and remarkable evolution.
Strathclyde achieved global recognition and redefined itself as a Leading International Technological University with a socially progressive ethos.
Research income surged more than 350% to £125 million and total income more than doubled to £487 million. A £1 billion campus redevelopment programme was delivered, and the University played a pivotal role in establishing two of Scotland’s most significant innovation districts: Glasgow City Innovation District and the Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District Scotland which are socially progressive underpinned by a successful and distinctive strategy.
Strathclyde’s achievements under Sir Jim’s strategic leadership have been widely recognised. The university remains the only institution to have received the Times Higher UK University of the Year award twice and has been honoured with three consecutive Queen’s Anniversary Prizes.
Sir Jim’s academic journey began at Strathclyde, where he earned his BSc, MSc and PhD. After seven years in the UK electricity supply industry, he returned to the university in 1984 as a lecturer. He was later appointed to the Rolls-Royce Chair in Electrical Power Systems, served as Head of Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering and became Deputy Principal for Research and Knowledge Exchange before assuming the role of Principal.
His contributions extend far beyond academia. In 2012, he was knighted for services to education, engineering, and the economy. In 2019, he became the first Scot to serve as President of the Royal Academy of Engineering, a role he held until 2024. Most recently, he was appointed a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire in the 2024 New Years Honours for his services to engineering, education and energy.
Sir Jim continues to shape Scotland’s economic future. In January 2025, he was appointed Chair of Scottish Enterprise, Scotland’s national economic development agency. On his appointment, Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes remarked: “Professor McDonald is an internationally recognised figure with a track record of driving innovation and change.
“His experience and expertise will no doubt be an asset to Scottish Enterprise, which attracts investment and backs ambitious companies and projects throughout Scotland.”
Sharing his outlook on the appointment,
Sir Jim McDonald said: “It is an honour to take on the role of Chair of Scottish Enterprise. Scotland is rich in talent, innovation, and opportunity, and I am committed to working with the organisation and its partners to drive economic growth, create opportunities, and champion sustainable development in achieving a net zero economy.”
In recognition of his enduring impact, Sir Jim was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2025 Glasgow Business Awards in October. Stuart Patrick, Chief Executive of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, praised his decades-long influence across academia, industry, and civic life, describing him as “a powerhouse and one of the most influential leaders Glasgow has ever had”.
As he embarks on this next chapter, Sir Jim McDonald leaves behind a legacy defined by innovation, collaboration, and an unwavering commitment to public service. His leadership has not only elevated the University of Strathclyde but has also helped shape Glasgow and Scotland’s reputation on the global stage.
