Elena Marburger, Campus Cycling Officer for Cycling Scotland at Fife College, was awarded the title of “Most Enterprising Environmental Intern” at the Bright Green Business Environmental Placement Programme 2023 awards. The awards, held at Queen Margaret University on 9th November, celebrate placing students and recent graduates in a Scottish business for a minimum of 12 weeks to undertake a specific environmental project tailored to the host’s needs.

Marburger said: “I had an amazing time participating in the EPP Awards. It was amazing to be able to see what the other participants had been able to accomplish during their internships and I was very happy to be able to show what I have done in mine. I’m especially grateful to Bright Green Business, Cycling Scotland and Fife College for their support!”

The judges were particularly impressed by how much lasting impact Marburger’s Cycle Hire Website would have for Fife College. The website, which she developed and launched during her placement, made it possible for members of the campus community to rent equipment and learn about cycling opportunities as well as help the college monitor the status of the programme. Judge Ovie Frederick-Simon, last year’s award winner, noted that the programme might not have been able to continue if not for Ms Marburger’s efforts, and especially lauded her efforts to ensure the website would be of service after her placement ends.

The placement initiative, which has been running for 20 years, allows the graduate to put the skills from their degree into practice, whilst the host business gains from their knowledge and enthusiasm.

From nearly 50 participants, four finalists presented to a panel from the environmental and training worlds.

Alison Wood, programme manager of Climate Springboard at the Edinburgh Climate Change Institute, told the audience about Reducing Your Climate Impact.

Karen Ritchie, CEO of Bright Green Business, said: “I’m always amazed by the impact our interns have on their host organisations during such short time and this event is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate their work and highlight the Green Careers potential of students and graduates entering the workforce.”
