A UK business leader highlighted the vital role Ayrshire SMEs and larger companies play in tackling current economic challenges and building a more resilient future on a visit to the region.
Hosted by Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce, the visit by Sarah Howard MBE, Chair of the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), spotlighted the BCC’s role in championing UK businesses through strategic advocacy, policy influence and practical support.
With economic uncertainty continuing to affect companies at every level, the event underscored the importance of national collaboration and local engagement.
In her keynote presentation, Sarah spoke about how the BCC network is helping businesses meet challenges head-on – from trade disruptions and rising costs to labour shortages and changing regulations.
Sarah Howard, Chair of the BCC said, “Businesses have been through some tough times recently. They have been battered by increasing costs due to rises in national insurance, the national living wage and US tariffs.
“Changes to employment rights threaten to add another £5bn to their bills and the global economic outlook remains clouded. The BCC will continue to fight the corner for firms across the UK to be given the best chance to grow and invest.
“But one of the best parts of being Chair of the BCC is to get out on the ground to visit businesses. When I speak to Chamber members in places like Ayrshire, I can’t help but be optimistic. There is so much talent, innovation and expertise in our network that I’m confident the future remains bright.”
On arrival to Ayrshire, Sarah visited Land Energy, Ayrshire Chamber Platinum Partners in Girvan, a company that has grown to become one of the largest wood pellet manufacturers in the UK.
Lunch for Chamber members, Platinum Partners and Chamber Board members followed at Trump Turnberry, where Sarah invited comments about the current challenges faced by Ayrshire businesses with trade and export opportunities, strengthening local supply chains and developing skills all featuring in the topics for discussion.
Claire Baird, Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce CEO said: “It was a genuine pleasure to host Sarah in Ayrshire and to be able to introduce her to some of our members. In times of uncertainty, our business community shows just how powerful collaboration can be. Our conversations highlighted the energy, innovation and resolve across Ayrshire and the need for continued national support.
“The BCC plays a crucial role in helping us turn today’s challenges into tomorrow’s opportunities.”
The event concluded with a behind-the-scenes tour of Trump Turnberry Resort, highlighting Ayrshire’s strength in hospitality and its contribution to regional prosperity.
