After successfully delivering fully funded Carbon Reduction training to 30 businesses in South Ayrshire, University of the West of Scotland (UWS) has grand plans to extend delivery of the programme to businesses across Scotland and internationally.

The inaugural Carbon Champions Programme was funded by the UK Community Renewal Fund and was delivered by University of the West of Scotland, in partnership with South Ayrshire Council and with the support of Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce, Ayrshire College and Entrepreneurial Scotland.

Project Lead, Luna Chao Guo, said: “We are delighted to have supported so many businesses through this initiative, with all participants already able to demonstrate practical changes made within their organisations to support their Net Zero goals. As new regions across the country approach us about Carbon Reduction training for businesses, we remain incredibly excited at the prospect of growing our Carbon Champions Community in Scotland and beyond.”

To celebrate the success of this pioneering project, the UWS Centre for Continuing Professional Development will be hosting a series of free, online taster sessions to showcase the positive outcomes of the programme.

South Ayrshire Carbon Champions: One Year On

Tuesday 25th October | 12:00 – 13:00

From our initial idea to programme delivery, Luna will share her journey of planning and delivering carbon reduction training for 30 South Ayrshire Businesses, and will share future plans ambitions for growing the community of Carbon Champions, across Scotland and further afield.

Luna will be joined by guest speaker Leanne Cairns, owner of Leanne Cairns Millinery and Carbon Champions Alum! As one of the first business owners to register for the programme, and uniquely, one of the only sole traders to take part in this programme, Leanne will be sharing her experiences and discussing the programme’s impact on the way she operates.

Carbon Accounting & Becoming a Carbon Champion

Wednesday 26th October | 12:00 – 13:00

In this joint session, you will hear from Dr Kiri Rodgers and Dr Dalia Alazzeh as they discuss the processes of Carbon Accounting, and our Carbon Champions Training Framework.

Dr Dalia Alazzeh will discuss Carbon Accounting – the process by which organizations quantify their emissions, so that they may understand their climate impact and set goals to limit their emissions. With mounting pressure on organisations to reduce their carbon footprint, carbon accounting will soon become a vital skill required within organisations of all sizes.

Dr Kiri Rodgers will give an overview of our Carbon Champions Training Framework, underpinning the key elements of the programme that empower our Carbon Champions to make positive, practical changes within their organisations to reduce their emissions and increase sustainability.

Climate Disclosure for Small & Medium Enterprises

Thursday 27th October | 12:00 – 13:00

Sustainability is no longer an option for business owners. Large organisations must report their energy use and carbon emissions every year, but we know that SMEs will soon be required to do the same. Join Dr Abeer Hassan for a free taster session to explore climate disclosure for Small & Medium Enterprises. If you are a small business owner, this session is not to be missed!

All sessions will be taking place on Zoom. Upon registering, you will receive the Zoom link to the live sessions, and the link will be the same for each of the three sessions.
