University of the West of Scotland is leading a project to deliver support and training to enable organisations across South Ayrshire to meet the national Net Zero goals, and position South Ayrshire as a national leader in green working practices.

A cohort of twenty organisations from the region have accessed fully funded consultancy and training to support operational plans for decarbonisation and improved sustainability, and are now ‘Carbon Champions’ – skilled auditors, able to recognise challenges and opportunities for improvement in their own organisations.

The project is funded by the National Community Renewal Fund and is delivered by University of the West of Scotland, in partnership with South Ayrshire Council and with the support of Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce, Ayrshire College and Entrepreneurial Scotland.

Luna Chao Guo, Carbon Champions Project Lead at UWS said the following:

“Businesses often lack time, suitable resources and funding to assess and improve their environmental impact, so I feel very proud that the Carbon Champions programme will empower South Ayrshire businesses to meet their Net Zero goals.

As the Carbon Champions network grows, we’re cultivating a community of forward-thinking businesses who will thrive in a greener Scotland, and pave the way for other businesses who want to follow suit.”

After the success of our first cohort, we are now looking for a further ten businesses in the South Ayrshire Region to join the Carbon Champions Community and take their next steps towards Net Zero.

Participating organisations receive a support package with minimum value of £15,000 which includes:

  • Consultations with expert environmental consultants
  • A baseline audit of current working practices
  • 10 weeks of interactive workshops with UWS Academics and Industry Experts
  • Access to industry resources
  • Endless Networking Opportunities

UWS Centre for Continuing Professional Development are hosting a Community Engagement Event at UWS Ayr Campus on Thursday 11th August from 10:00 am to showcase the Carbon Champions Programme, and share more information with local businesses who are looking to tackle their carbon emissions.

On the day, attendees will be able to gain insight into what’s included in the fully-funded programme, speak to Carbon Champions alumni, and visit our Net Zero Zone – a dedicated hot desking and networking space for course participants.

The event is free to attend, but advanced registration is required to confirm your place:
