An Alternative Path

Why More Young People are Choosing the Workplace over University

By Direct Partners Training Provider

For decades, the path after school looked the same for most young people: college, university, then a job, eventually. But that path isn’t the only one anymore, and for a growing number of school leavers, it isn’t even the best one.

At Direct Partners, we work with young people every day who are choosing a different route: earning a wage, gaining a nationally recognised qualification, and building real workplace experience, all at the same time. It’s called a Modern Apprenticeship, and it might just be Scotland’s best-kept career secret.

Not the Traditional Route?

University and college will always be the right choice for some. But for many young people, the idea of years of study, growing debt, and a job search at the end of it holds little appeal, especially when there’s a route that offers a wage, hands-on experience, and a recognised qualification from day one.

Modern Apprenticeships offer exactly that. Rather than choosing between education and employment, apprentices get both. They step straight into a real job with a real employer, and their on-the-job learning is built into a structured, funded qualification.

From the Classroom to the Workplace

Getting started can feel like the hardest part, which is why Direct Partners supports young people right from that first step. Before an apprenticeship even begins, we help school leavers prepare for the world of work – building a CV, practising for interviews, and connecting them with our network of employer partners across Scotland.

Once a young person is ready, we help match them with employers who are actively recruiting apprentices. From there, our role shifts to supporting them throughout their apprenticeship journey, right through to completion.

Frameworks Built around Real Jobs

We deliver a broad range of Modern Apprenticeship frameworks, funded by Skills Development Scotland (SDS) and accredited by Qualifications Scotland — covering both entry-level roles and specialist tech pathways, including:

  • Facilities Services (Leisure) (SCQF Level 5)
  • Digital Applications / IT Support (SCQF Level 6)
  • Business and Administration (SCQF Level 6)
  • Digital Marketing (SCQF Level 7)
  • Childcare (SCQF Level 7)
  • Data Analytics (SCQF Level 8)
  • Software Development (SCQF Level 8)

Each framework is designed around the skills employers actually need, meaning apprentices aren’t just gaining a qualification… they’re building a career.

The Business Case: Why Employers Should Take Notice Too

Apprenticeships aren’t just a great option for young people, they make strong business sense for employers too.

National Insurance savings:
Employers recruiting an apprentice under the age of 25 are exempt from employer National Insurance contributions on their earnings, up to the Upper Secondary Threshold. Depending on the apprentice’s salary, that can mean a saving of thousands of pounds a year, which is money that can be reinvested back into the business.

Recruitment incentives:
Many local councils across Scotland offer employer recruitment incentives to businesses taking on a young apprentice. At Direct Partners, we help employers identify and source the incentives available in their area, making it easier (and more affordable) to bring young talent into the business.

It’s not just for new recruits:
One of the most overlooked aspects of Modern Apprenticeships is that they aren’t only for young people entering the workforce for the first time. There’s no upper age limit, and apprenticeships are just as valuable for upskilling existing staff. Employers can use the same funded frameworks to formalise the skills of current employees, support career progression, and close skills gaps from within, all while retaining the people who already know the business.

Two Routes, One Programme

That’s why we deliver our Modern Apprenticeship offer as two connected services:

  1. Youth employment – helping young people take their first step into work through entry-level apprenticeship roles.
  2. Staff upskilling – helping employers develop their existing workforce through the same fully funded qualifications.

Whether a business is hiring for the future or investing in the team it already has, apprenticeships offer a funded, practical way to build skills that stick.

Your Future Starts Here

For young people, a Modern Apprenticeship offers something university and college can’t always guarantee: a job, an income, and a qualification, all from day one. For employers, it offers a cost-effective way to recruit and develop talent, backed by funding and financial incentives designed to make it easier to say yes.

The workplace has become Scotland’s newest learning campus, and for many young people, it’s proving to be the smartest way in.
