Cameron McKendrick, Marketing & Events Executive, Scottish Chambers of Commerce

Over the past two years at the Scottish Chambers of Commerce (SCC), my role has allowed me to work closely with individuals from a range of backgrounds.

Our work transcends borders, which means I am constantly navigating cultural differences in my role as a Marketing and Events Executive.

Through the many events SCC hosts each year, I have had the privilege of connecting with people from all over the world – building relationships and learning about corners of the globe I may not have explored otherwise.

My Thai heritage plays a central role in who I am. Outside of SCC, I remain deeply engaged in Thai culture. I spend extended periods of time in Thailand in a small rice-farming village near Buriram in the Northeast of Thailand. There, I have dedicated myself to supporting the community, often looking after many of the village’s children.

I believe my motivation and work ethic are deeply rooted in this affinity with Thailand. Having travelled extensively to the country over the past 24 years, I have seen firsthand the unwavering dedication of those in the village – many of whom work every day of the year, without complaint yet remain grounded and humble. Their perseverance and positivity, even in the face of hardship, has shifted my perspective on working life. I now hold a greater appreciation for the privileges I have in the UK and strive the make the most of every opportunity. There is a reason Thailand is known as the “Land of Smiles” – their joy and gratitude, despite challenges, truly resonates with me.

During my time in Thailand, I have become proactively involved with the local primary and high schools. From sponsoring sports teams to delivering meals and attending events such as children’s day, I have tried to support the community in meaningful ways. Education has always been one of my greatest passions and I am committed to helping children access learning and opportunity wherever I can.

Through my position at SCC, I have been fortunate to support extracurricular activities at the local school. I have enabled them to send a group of ten students to compete at a national level, performing Muay Thai demonstrations. Alongside this, I have supported the students to participate in cross-village football, volleyball and Sepak Takraw competitions. It has been a joy to ensure these young people have the same chances as others their age.

Living in the village itself has allowed me to develop strong bonds with the children – I have mentored and tutored them in English and currently coach a badminton group after school, providing them with a safe and active environment. Many of these children have parents who live and work away from the village, leaving their upbringing in the hands of the grandparents. I have stepped in to support them, from providing food allowances to bringing them along on family holidays.

This work and these relationships motivate me deeply. I strive to be in a position where I can continue to support these children and give them access to a life filled with opportunity and enjoyment.

None of this would be possible without the support of my family both in the UK and Thailand. They have always encouraged me to work hard and embrace opportunity. Now, to be in a position to give back and support the next generation is one of my biggest drivers. My career so far has not been without challenge, but with their backing, I remain positive and ambitious.
