Verlume’s sustainable subsea power systems backed by Scottish Enterprise

Scottish Enterprise backs big thinkers to achieve even bigger success. If your business has the vision, Scottish Enterprise will be right behind you.

Verlume’s big thinking has seen it become a market leader with a suite of energy management technologies across the subsea ecosystem.

Solving a key challenge for renewable energy

While renewable energy sources like tidal, wave, and wind are abundant – particularly off Scotland’s blustery coasts – they all present the same challenge. How can the supply be stabilised?

When Verlume was first looked at solutions for this, the available battery storage technology was unfit for purpose, having been primarily designed for use in electric vehicles.

It was then that the company realised there was a critical piece of the renewable energy power system puzzle that simply didn’t exist – yet. So, the team at Verlume set about creating it.

Verlume’s revolutionary products

Verlume’s founding team came from a subsea background in the oil and gas industry. They also had skills from a range of disciplines across the full breadth of engineering. This combination enabled Verlume to develop the products that would revolutionise subsea energy storage and management.

Verlume’s patented intelligent energy management system, Axonn, was the first of these. Now, it’s incorporated into all the company’s energy storage technologies.

Axonn provides real-time insights into subsea power systems, such as their battery status and environmental conditions.

Support from Scottish Enterprise

Supporting the energy transition is a key mission for Scottish Enterprise. It saw the potential for Verlume’s solutions early on and has invested £5.4 million in the company to date.

Richard Knox, founder and CEO of Verlume, has said that “without Scottish Enterprise, our company wouldn’t have existed from day one. They’ve helped and supported us to grow our business and become successful”.

As for Verlume’s future, it’s got big plans. The company’s sights are set on being a first-tier offshore energy management company, leading the way in subsea power systems for the world’s harshest offshore environments.
